Mozambique

Overview

Mozambique, officially the Republic of Mozambique (República de Moçambique), is a country located in Southern Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Eswatini and South Africa to the southwest. The sovereign state is separated from the Comoros, Mayotte and Madagascar by the Mozambique Channel to the east. The capital and largest city of Mozambique is Maputo.

Mozambique is endowed with rich and extensive natural resources. The country’s economy is based largely on agriculture, but industry is growing, mainly food and beverages, chemical manufacturing and aluminum and petroleum production. Mozambique is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Commonwealth of Nations, the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Southern African Development Community, and is an observer at La Francophonie.

Housing

Mozambique provides an array of housing types for residents to choose from, including free-standing (detached) homes, townhomes, duplexes, apartments, and, as is popular with expats, homes inside gated estates. Homes do not often come with white goods included, though many apartment complexes have laundry facilities on site. Rental properties are often in high demand in major cities.

Schooling

Mozambique offers good quality schooling, with a variety of government, private, and international (foreign language) schools on offer. Immigration in Mozambique

Work Permit

A work permit is issued to foreign nationals who are offered employment opportunity in Mozambique. To be eligible for a work permit, foreign nationals will need to obtain authorisation from Mozambique’s Ministry of Labour. They are also required to have a confirmed job offer in hand before making the application.

Work permits are renewable and valid for two years.

Business Visa

A business visa is issued to a foreign national whose purpose of entry is business-related and is valid for a maximum of 90 days. A letter from the applicant’s company or the inviting company in Mozambique is required.

Approval and renewal are decided by the Department of Labour.

Residence Permit

The Residence Visa is issued for a single entry; the applicant must remain in the country for thirty (30) days, which may be extended up to sixty (60) days. Within this period, the holder of this type of visa must apply for a Residence Permit at the Immigration Services in Mozambique.

Residence Permits are issued to foreign nationals who want to stay in Mozambique for more than 90 days. This permit can be renewed annually.
