Mauritius Country Overview
Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean, off the eastern southern coast of Africa. This island has a population of an estimated 1.37 million people, making it the country with the highest population density in Africa.
Mauritius prides itself in having a culturally diverse population, descending from Africa, Indian, Chinese and European origin.
Although English is the official language, the Mauritian population is largely bilingual. The population is equally fluent in English and French, and Morisien. Morisien is the Creole language based on French used by almost the entire population.
The Island nation has a mild and tropical climate throughout the year. With two main seasons: a warm humid summer and a cool and dry winter. From November to April averages a summer temperature around 25 degrees Celsius, and June to September averages a winter temperature around 21 degrees Celsius.
The official currency in Mauritius is called the Mauritian Rupee. The economy of the country can be described as a mixed developing economy due to its tourism, agriculture, exports and financial services. The country has become one of the biggest foreign investment countries in Africa, earning one of Africa’s highest per capita income.
