Mauritius Country Overview

Mauritius is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean, off the eastern southern coast of Africa. This island has a population of an estimated 1.37 million people, making it the country with the highest population density in Africa.

Mauritius prides itself in having a culturally diverse population, descending from Africa, Indian, Chinese and European origin.

Although English is the official language, the Mauritian population is largely bilingual. The population is equally fluent in English and French, and Morisien. Morisien is the Creole language based on French used by almost the entire population.

The Island nation has a mild and tropical climate throughout the year. With two main seasons: a warm humid summer and a cool and dry winter. From November to April averages a summer temperature around 25 degrees Celsius, and June to September averages a winter temperature around 21 degrees Celsius.

The official currency in Mauritius is called the Mauritian Rupee. The economy of the country can be described as a mixed developing economy due to its tourism, agriculture, exports and financial services. The country has become one of the biggest foreign investment countries in Africa, earning one of Africa’s highest per capita income.

Housing in Mauritius

There are three basic types of house in Mauritius: wattle and daub construction with thatched roofs; galvanized sheet-iron structures, and houses constructed of wood.

There are various regions offering different types of lifestyle benefits and type of properties. The north and west region are highly touristic areas offering scenic views of sandy beaches, beautiful lavish shopping stores, bars, nightclubs and restaurants. Although it is away from the main tourist activities, the east coast region still has sandy beaches, clear waters and beautiful restaurants.

Accommodation for rent usually comes furnished and equipped with the essential household appliances. Leases are usually long-term and renewable yearly. You will need one/two month’s rent as a deposit. Utilities such as electricity and water may be included in the rent, but this seldom happens.

Schooling in Mauritius

Mauritius offers good quality schooling, with a variety of government, private, and international (foreign language) schools on offer. Foreign countries represented with international schools include the United Kingdom, Germany, and France.

There is an alternative solution for expat students which are international schools. International schools offer similar standards of schooling around the world, which eases the transition between schools on different continents. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, France, etc. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English.

Immigration to Mauritius

Tourist Visas

Tourist visas in Mauritius are issued upon arrival to visa exempt passport holders and are valid for a maximum period up to 60 days. Visa restricted passport holders would need to apply for their tourist visa at the relevant Mauritian Embassy in their country of origin or residence. Travellers should hold a passport with a minimum validity of 6 months as from date of arrival, a valid return ticket and sufficient funds to meet the costs of their stay in Mauritius.

Business Visa

A Business visa in Mauritius does not allow remunerated work activities to be conducted. Attending conferences, seminars, training and meetings are the only form of activity allowed on this visa. A business visa may be issued for up to 120 days per calendar year.
In Mauritius, business visas are issued only upon arrival at the airport in Mauritius. For obtaining the business visa, the applicant should also provide the Immigration Officer at the airport with a letter from local sponsor/company explaining the applicant’s purpose of his trip to Mauritius and thereby requesting for a business visa to be issued to the applicant. A tourist visa cannot be converted to a business visa in Mauritius.
