Scrap birth certificate requirement or risk downgrade, warn business leaders

Scrap birth certificate requirement or risk downgrade, warn business leaders

South Africa needs to scrap the unabridged birth certificate requirement to save the economy and increase revenue from the tourism sector, business leaders have warned.

South Africa needs to scrap the unabridged birth certificate requirement in order to prevent a credit downgrade by rating agencies, business leaders have warned in an op-ed in the Sunday Times.

Colin Coleman, MD and partner of Goldman Sachs International; Christo Wiese, Chairman of Shoprite and the controlling shareholder of Brait and Steinhoff; and Cas Coovadia, MD of the Banking Association South Africa presented this recommendation, along with others, after attending an investment roadshow in London, Boston and New York, led by Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan.
