Mozambique denies citizens are seeking refuge in Malawi

mozambiqueMaputo – Mozambican authorities have disputed reports of Malawian refugees fleeing their country due to political clashes, saying that the foreign citizens were merely migrants.

According to Nyasa Times, President Filipe Nyusi said that there was no war in Mozambique that warranted the fleeing of its citizens and that the reported 6 000 refugees that entered Malawi recently were exhibiting normal migrant behaviour.

Skirmishes between Mozambique’s ruling Frelimo party and the opposition Renamo in strategic parts of the country have led to a mass exodus of civilians into Malawi.

Nicaragua paroles 8 000 convicts

NicaraguaNicaragua has released more than 8 000 convicts on parole and sent 94 foreigners to finish sentences in their home countries since 2014, easing overcrowding in prisons, the government said Monday.

All the 8 149 Nicaraguans given conditional release had been put behind bars with light sentences of five years or less, the government said in a statement.

It gave no details on the foreign convicts deported beyond the figures: 58 sent home in 2014, 31 in 2015 and five so far this year.

The releases were approved by the justice ministry, national prosecutors and the police, and were part of “a humanitarian and reconciliation policy.”

Authorities did not say what the remaining prison population was in the Central American nation.

Home Affairs gets tough on expired visas

Immigration - Animal SquareThe Committee is responding to the fact that it is the Minister’s opinion that fines on foreigners who overstay their welcome were not serving as a sufficient deterrent to cease the regular practice of non-residents to continue their stay beyond the expiry date of their visa.

Troublesome clause
Section 30 of the 2002 Immigration Act has already been amended a couple of times regarding either the wording itself, which has not stood up in court, or, in the opinion of the DHA is now insufficient in itself as a deterrent to the practice.
The wording of the last amendment had led to various interpretations and to quote the government gazette on the issue, “some holding the view that a foreigner must overstay a number of times to be declared undesirable while others hold the view that one instance of overstaying would result in a declaration of undesirable.”

Israelis Travel To SA Despite Ill Will, South Africans Travel To Israel Because Of It

israelIsrael and South Africa have poor relations, but travel-hungry Israelis didn’t seem to mind that in the second half of 2015, judging from a 15 percent increase in Israeli arrivals to South Africa, according to a report in TourismUpdate.
Tanzania has been a popular destination for Israelis, while South Africa saw a dip in the Israeli market, said Terry Kessel, managing director at Israel-based Diesenhaus Travel. South Africa is becoming fashionable again with Israelis, Kessel said. Israelis have started inquiring again about travel to South Africa.
In October, the African National Congress National General Council recommended that travel to Israel be discouraged unless it promotes solidarity with the Palestinian struggle, IndependentOnline reported.
