5 reasons why raising children overseas is great!

a child with a globe and a sunset

Expat child benefits

Understandably, the idea of uprooting your family from their home and moving them half way across the world can be incredibly daunting – and that’s on top of the stresses involved in moving home in the first place.

It’s easy to assume that expatriate children will resent their parents for taking them away from familiar surroundings, and perhaps find it impossible to adjust to new surroundings. In reality, expats generally find that their children adjust quicker than they’d hoped, or at least find it easier over time. And the benefits of moving can drastically outweigh the possible hurdles your family might face along the way. Don’t dismiss the chance of a more fulfilling and advantageous life for your children before you consider the undeniable benefits of an expatriate lifestyle.

Your children will experience more of the world
Thousands of young adults choose to take a gap year and travel the world as a break from education, or more importantly to broaden their horizons and experience the world beyond their home-cities. Traveling gives people a hands-on learning experience of the world they live in. It also teaches us a great deal about our limitations, our passions and ourselves. Additionally, employers are paying increasing attention to ‘well-travelled’ job applicants with global experience.

Report Blames Media for Xenophobic Panic in S Africa

Johannesburg — A series of sensational newspaper headlines and the dissemination of false information on social media contributed to the deadly outbreak of xenophobia-related violence last year, a new report says.Johannesburg Cover

“The failure of media houses to contextualise the violent occurrences sent shock waves across the country and around the world,” said the government-commissioned report released on Tuesday that investigated the causes and consequences of the xenophobic attacks in KwaZulu-Natal province.

Seven people were killed and about 5,000 others displaced in a wave of violence against foreign nationals between March and May 2015.

“The spreading of misinformation on social media platforms contributed to widespread panic at the height of the attacks in April 2015,” it said.

A probe headed by Judge Navi Pillay, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, took place over seven months and also found shortcomings by law enforcement agencies contributed to tensions between locals and foreigners.

‘Preventive action missing’

Chinese Tourists Help Push South African Tourism Out Of The Doldrums

South Africa’s tourism industry has seen its ups and downs, and right now, it’s up, thanks in part to Chinese tourists.
Overseas arrivals to South Africa in January 2016 increased 16 percent compared to January 2015, part of a growth in overseas arrivals that started in November and continued in December.
A fairly horrible year for South African tourism in 2015, the industry was hurt by Ebola fears over an outbreak thousands of miles away, and changes in the country’s visa regulations. Tourism arrivals dropped 6.8 percent overall for the year, TourismUpdate reported.00221917e13e135c1f0d0d-620x350
Arrivals from China, which have been growing since September, were up 93 percent in January, according to TourismUpdate. South Africa’s key source markets all experienced significant growth in January, with arrivals from the U.K., U.S. and Germany up 16 percent, 11 percent and 22 percent respectively. Arrivals from The Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and France were also up.
India contributed an 11 percent increase in arrivals while arrivals from fellow BRIC country Brazil were down 8 percent.
Arrivals were up 15 percent from the 14-member Southern African Development Community — Angola, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
